Post-natal massasge

Similarly to pregnancy massage, postnatal massage is a nurturing, relaxing experience tailored entirely to your needs. Postnatal massage can help to: give emotional support, alleviate muscle strain, promote pelvic floor healing, rebalance the spine and pelvis, restore and normalise abdominal structures, help C-section healing, restore normal walking patterns, and prevent and reduce back and neck pain caused by newborn care. Baby is welcome to come too.

Pilates in Pregnancy

Pilates can be very helpful during and after pregnancy.  Providing your pregnancy is relatively straight-forward, there is no reason why you cannot continue to do Pilates up to your due date (and beyond!).

Some of the benefits of practicing Pilates in pregnancy include:

  • Increased abdominal strength helping support the spine

  • Strengthened pelvic floor muscles

  • Improved posture to help prevent back problems and general aches and pains

  • Improved circulation reducing chance of varicose veins and leg cramps

  • Increased stamina and energy

  • Faster postnatal recovery

  • Aiding breathing in labour

  • Relaxation

The group class setting also gives you the opportunity to meet other pregnant mums-to-be and gives you some time for discussion of things like birth preparation, optimal foetal positioning, etc if you wish.  The studio class is on a Tuesday at 6.30pm but it can also be accessed via Zoom if you prefer. Bookings  can be made on the online  booking system or by email or phone.  One-to-one Pilates sessions are also available.

Restorative yoga for pregnancy & birth preparation

This class usually runs once per month on a Saturday 12-1pm.  You can do just one or several throughout your pregnancy. These classes provide a safe, nurturing space to learn and practice yoga postures, relaxation and breath techniques that will be useful in labour and help to manage any anxiety during pregnancy.  This class is suitable from 12 weeks but can be joined at any stage of pregnancy after this, and is designed to be stand-alone so even attending one class will provide you with a toolkit of techniques you can utilise when the time comes. Pregnancy is a time where it is really helpful to quieten the mind, let go of time pressures and constant doing to help create a consciously relaxed state, where you can connect with yourself, baby and your inner birthing wisdom. In the class we will:

- talk about the natural physiology of birth and a little about what to expect at different stages of the labour process.

- learn how to manage fear, trust your body and nurture a sense of empowerment.

- create a positive intention and guided relaxation, while learning how to let go of the intellect and connect with our intuition and instincts.

- use breath as your anchor during labour, with breath techniques for the different stages of labour. We practice some helpful yoga postures for different stages of labour building an inner and outer strength that will help support you along the course of labour. We conclude with a long restorative relaxation, fully supporting you to let go and connect with baby and your inner self. Above all, birth preparation yoga classes aim to support women as they approach childbirth and enter into motherhood.

Mum and Baby Pilates

Some of the benefits of practicing Pilates postnatally include:

  • increased abdominal, back and pelvic floor muscle strength

  • helping support the spine

  • helping muscles regain shape more quickly

  • increased stamina and energy

  • improved posture to help prevent back problems and general aches and pains

  • faster postnatal recovery

  • preparing the body for return to other forms of exercise

  • helping to deal with split rectus abdominal muscles

  • helping to rehabilitate abdominal muscles post C-section

  • helping improve weak pelvic floor to address incontinence/urgency

  • relaxation

The mum and baby class is suitable for mums with their baby aged 6 weeks (or 12 weeks after a c-section) to 1 year.  Bring a mat for you and a blanket for your baby to lie on and a couple of wee toys to play with. The focus is on safely strengthening pelvic and abdominal muscles and mobilising the back. Postnatal issues can be discussed and the class can help to work on rehabilitating weak pelvic floor to address incontinence/urgency and on helping rehabilitate diastasis recti (split abdominal muscles). The class is run to fit as much work in to the session as possible so you get the most benefit from your time in class each week. Baby can either sleep, lie on the mat and watch or can be incorporated  into the movements.  The class is flexible so you are able to feed, change and comfort your baby whenever you need to. You can come into the studio or join via Zoom if you prefer.  The class has a maximum of 8 mums in the studio.  Bookings can be arranged on the online booking system or by email or phone .  One-to-one Pilates sessions are also available.
